Working Meeting held for Judges in Borjomi

On February 16-18, the USAID/PROLoG, together with the EU funded judiciary support project, organized a workshop for Georgian Supreme Court judges on Article 6 of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR). The meeting was opened by the chairperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia and HCoJ- Nino Gvenetadze, a representative of PROLoG- Giorgi Vashakidze, EU4Justice project representative- Lali Chkhetia and ECHR experts-Besarion Bokhashvili and Levan Meskhoradze.

The experts, together with the participants of the workshop discussed the fundamental case law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) reflecting common principles of fair trial. Moreover, in the view of Georgian cases pending before ECtHR, participants discussed common challenges and possible solutions to remaining issues with the effective application of Article 6 ECHR in practice.  At the end of the workshop the Supreme Court judges expressed strong interest in receiving similar trainings in future. The Chief justice was highly appreciative of the opportunity to discuss the challenges related to admissibility criteria and Article 6 of the ECHR, and stressed the need for continuing the discussion. She noted that these kinds of workshops provide the unique and the only opportunity for the Supreme Court judges to share experiences and discuss the many challenges that they face in today’s increasing litigious world.
